Martlesham Heath Control Tower Museum

Between WW1 and WW2 it was the home of the "Aeroplane & Armament Experimental Establishment" (A.& A.E.E.). As their title suggests it was their responsibility to test all new aeroplanes including civilian aeroplanes. WW1 had seen the development of armaments but there was a requirement for testing which MH and Orfordness provided.

In 1940 MH as part of 11 group took part in the Battle of Britain. For the rest of WW 2 it was used jointly by the RAF and in 1943 to 1945 by the 356th Fighter Group USAAF.

After the end of WW 2 MH returned in part to testing and developing aeroplanes, the age of the atomic bomb and jet engines was here. MH was used by the Blind Landing and the Bomb Ballistic Units to name just two prominent testing units.
