Southwold, with its glorious sandy beach, happy-looking beach huts, quirky pier, stylish independent shops and thriving market town atmosphere, is simply the quintessential British seaside town.
Though its beach is postcard-perfect, there’s much more to Southwold than buckets and spades. Food and drink are an integral part of the Southwold experience. As well as numerous delis, the town has several restaurants, cafés and award-winning pubs including The Crown, the Good Pub Guide’s ‘Best Dining Pub in Suffolk’ (2013). Southwold is also home to the world-famous Adnams Sole Bay Brewery and its sister distillery, both of which are open for tours throughout the week.
Southwold’s pretty Pier is another focal point for visitors and locals. Alongside the cafés and shops are the amusements, which range from traditional two-penny pushers to Tim Hunkin’s amazing, eccentric inventions (his ‘Whack a Banker’ game is an eternal favourite).
And when you’re all whacked out, there are plenty of quality hotels, self-catered beach houses and camping sites to rest up in, making Southwold the perfect base for a longer Suffolk holiday.
