Gainsborough’s House is the national centre for Thomas Gainsborough (1727-88) and is the largest museum & art gallery in Suffolk.
In 2019, Gainsborough’s House commenced a £10m building project supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. On 21 November 2022, the museum re-opened to the public after a transformational refurbishment; introducing 3 new exhibition spaces to accompany the original Grade I listed building.
Visitors can view the most comprehensive collection of Gainsborough’s work alongside temporary exhibitions of international appeal. Our varied programme of specialist exhibitions includes both historical and contemporary art.
As part of the museum experience, The Watering Place café serves coffee, pastries and light lunches overlooking our beautiful walled gardens. The peaceful garden is at the heart of Gainsborough’s House and includes a centrepiece Mulberry Tree which is over 400 years old. Our museum gift shop provides a carefully curated selection of gifts for all and for all price ranges.
