Red deer stag in Suffolk (c) Paul Sawer

Regardless of how old we are or where we come from, nature always has the power to awe and inspire us. There is an abundance of wildlife in Suffolk, from common seals bobbing in the surf to bitterns booming in the reed beds, and mighty red stags locking horns on misty September mornings.

A family of nature lovers could set out with a pair of binoculars to one of Suffolk’s many wildlife hotspots, such as Dunwich Heath, Havergate Island, Cavenham Heath, Thetford Forest or Brandon Country Park. However, if your family is new to wildlife spotting, why not pay a visit to RSPB Minsmere?
Nowhere in Suffolk, or the whole of the UK, is wildlife more plentiful than at this famous nature reserve on the Suffolk Coast. RSPB Minsmere is a mixed landscape of wetland, woodland and coast that’s home to some of the UK’s rarest and most beautiful wildlife. On a summer’s day you might witness elegant avocets skimming the water with their long beaks, or hear the distinctive chirrup of the endangered Dartford warbler. Best of all, there are guides on hand to talk you through the sights and sounds of the reserve, making the experience both fun and educational for the whole family.

RSPB Minsmere also holds numerous events throughout the year to help children and adults get into nature. These include weekly wildlife walks, birds for beginners’ courses, binocular demonstrations, photography workshops, migration watches, wild sleepouts, and much more. Get the family up bright and early to hear the dawn chorus resonating around RSPB Minsmere, or take them on safari to see the majestic red stags during rutting season. Or why not bring the whole family together to build a den? A fun test of teamwork, den building at RSPB Minsmere is a real bonding experience; and when the den is complete you can take a special family photo of you all inside it.
