A popular venue for painting and photography as well as yacht and dinghy sailing, Pin Mill is a hamlet on the south bank of the tidal River Orwell, on the outskirts of the village of Chelmondiston, on the Shotley peninsula in southern Suffolk.
It lies within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is a designated Conservation Area with many signposted walks, including through the National Trust-run Cliff Plantation forest and Stour and Orwell Walk.
Pin Mill is perhaps best known for the traditional 17th century Butt & Oyster public house, a listed building with bay windows that afford panoramic views of the Orwell estuary.
Pin Mill was once a busy landing point for ship-borne cargo and a centre for the repair of Thames sailing barges as well as being home to small industries such as sail making.
The east coast has a long history of smuggling, in which Pin Mill and the Butt and Oyster pub allegedly played key parts.
