Culture & Arts

The Suffolk offers the best in culture and arts outside of London. We’re home to nationally and internationally renowned festivals, theatres, venues and touring companies. We’re also the place where world-class talent is celebrated, built and nurtured.

Take Suffolk’s Snape Maltings and its long-running Aldeburgh Festival, which was founded by Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears in 1948 and has grown to become Europe’s most important season of live classical music. Or the Norfolk & Norwich Festival, a flagship multi-discipline arts festival that traces its roots back nearly 250 years.

Add in Southwold’s Latitude Festival, which has over the past two decades become one of world’s most respected music and arts events; Great Yarmouth’s Out There Festival, which conjures up an action-packed free weekend of circus, comedy, street arts and music; and Lowestoft’s all-new and free First Light 24-hour festival, which welcomes over 20,000 visitors to the UK’s most easterly point to celebrate the summer solstice… and you begin to see why we’re so proud our festival offering.

On a more day-to-day basis, Norwich hosts the National Centre for Writing, while, football team rivalries aside, Ipswich offers up both DanceEast, a national centre for dance, and the New Wolsey Theatre, which is nationally celebrated for its original musicals and support for new writing… and all of these are just the tip of the region’s cultural iceberg.

Flick through our Culture and Arts pages and you’ll be sure to find something that will have you venturing east at your earliest opportunity.
