Theatre & Drama

The Suffolk has spawned a myriad of actors. Academy Award-winning actors Sir John Mills and Olivia Colman grew up in Great Yarmouth and Norwich respectively, two-times Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes was born in Ipswich, while Hollywood A-lister Hugh Jackman regularly returns to Norwich to visit his mother and watch his beloved Norwich City F.C.

The region also enjoys more than its share of theatrical offerings. The New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich is internationally known for its consistent output of daring new works, while the Theatre Royals in Norwich and Bury St Edmunds are mainstays of the repertory circuit – frequently staging productions fresh from West End runs.

In addition, the East is home to a wide range of professional touring companies, including the Ipswich-based Eastern Angles, who specialise in rural touring, site-specific theatre and new writing, and Norwich-centred musical theatre lovers Sound Ideas, who have morphed from being a bunch of mates singing around a piano in a garage to establishing a multi-award-winning troupe in just over five years.
