This is the perfect way to retrace the steps of royalty!

You will hear how the town developed, in the words of James I from a ‘quaint little village’ into the Home of Horseracing but you will also learn that there is more to Newmarket than just the 3,000 horses in training in the town. Join our History and Heritage Walking Tour and learn more about this fascinating town which has been a favourite destination for royals since the 17th century.

The tour lasts approximately two hours, starting at 9am from the Rutland Arms Hotel and at the first point of interest, the Bill Tutte memorial where you will meet your guide and then enjoy the sights of historical interest including Palace House, The Jockey Club Rooms and Tattersalls, the world-famous auction house where horses are still sold in guineas. You will see where Kings built their palaces, the cottage where one of them housed his best-known mistress, Nell Gwynn, on his visits to Newmarket and All Saints Church which a famous family had turned around because it got in the way of their building plans!

The History and Heritage Tour includes a historic Walking Tour where you can discover the history and heritage of Newmarket from the time of King James I to the present day and learn how the town has developed into the international Home of Horseracing.

The complete History and Heritage walking tour includes both the full walking tour and breakfast option outlined above, as well as the time at Palace House which is situated in Charles II’s sporting palace and stables and spans five acres in the heart of Newmarket. Exploring the sites three complementary attractions which are the National Horseracing Museum, the National Heritage and Sporting Art and the flagship home of the Retraining of Racehorses yard.

For larger groups, a driving tour of the town can be arranged in place of the Walking Tour and this will also take in the famous Newmarket Gallops where visitors will see some of the 3,000 racehorses exercising on Warren Hill.
