“Brothers in Arms”, purports to relate to events which took place locally in 1418, when villagers gathered to celebrate the birth of the Oak Moon. Festivities are abruptly interrupted by the Earl of Suffolk, William de la Pole, who having received a Call to Arms from King Henry V (of Agincourt fame) is required to ‘recruit’ soldiers for the ongoing war in France. Sadly, he has little choice, if he is to meet his levy, but to press into service a motley crew of peasant Mummers. Needless to say, Good battles Evil, a death follows, but can the Doctor save the day yet again?

Rendham Mummers (or Guisers as they are sometimes called), now in their ninth season, seek to entertain and maintain the traditions of this unique form of street theatre, which dates back to medieval times. The blacking/masking of the faces reflects the belief held that they would be cursed by the Devil should they be recognised.

Further performances follow later this summer at Rendham White Horse, August Bank Holiday Monday 27th August, 12.30pm. All proceeds from the Hat Collection taken at the end of performances is being donated to Fresh Start – new beginnings; a Children’s Charity, working across Suffolk and Norfolk, which provides a therapeutic service for victims of child sexual abuse.
What better way to celebrate Bastille Day than to be at a great pub, drinking great beer, with friends, in a perfect setting?
“ From this day to the ending of the World, we in it shall be remembered ............ Joey the Horse, Doctor, Fool, Oak Maiden, Oak King, the Earl, and, bien sur, les Francais. Gentlefolk in England shall think themselves accursed they were not there.....”
