Details

This extensive course will introduce participants to the fascinating world of bats and assumes no previous knowledge. Its content will provide a foundation for anyone wanting to satisfy an interest, or to become more involved in bat conservation, including bat care, or to progress to achieving a bat survey licence or roost visitor licence, after gaining sufficient experience. During the daytime sessions we will cover the biology of bats and their environmental requirements in general, but particularly the 17 species of British bats. There are several bat roosts on the site and you will have the opportunity to try to locate them, using the knowledge gained in the classroom. We will also cover bat evolution, and the classification and nomenclature of our native species, progressing to their identification in the hand, with the opportunity to see some live specimens. There will be sessions on echolocation and bat detectors, and the identification of some of our native species from their echolocation calls, which we will put into practice during evening field-work, when we expect to find and identify some of the commoner species in flight
