Details

Suffolk’s original Summer Theatre is returning as the centrepiece of live, seasonal entertainment for Aldeburgh and the Suffolk Coast in 2019. From 23rd July to 31st August the highly experienced acting, production, and creative team, drawn from, and inspired by, the original Jill Freud and Company, will join forces with new writers and directors, young, emerging local talents, and guest Artistes and companies, to create a brand-new programme of family-friendly theatre classics and ground-breaking, new performance events.

Our opener, Noel Coward’s comic masterpiece Blithe Spirit, is in preparation at The Workshop – our rehearsal and Studio Theatre space in Southwold. Since we selected it, back in January, the play has become the Zeitgeist Classic of summer 2019, with Jennifer Saunders and Judi Dench both giving their Madame Arcati this year – so don’t miss ours! This tale of “One Man, Two Wives, and at least One Ghost” features razor-sharp performances, a unique design, and inspired direction by award-winning Phil Clark.
Our Jungle Book, by Tracey Power from the Kipling original, is a feast of storytelling, music, and physical theatre – and the first Family / Children’s show in many a year from Summer Theatre, playing Saturday mornings at 11 am, and with a special “relaxed performance” on Sunday 25th August at 3pm.
We are also delighted to reveal an absolute hidden gem - comedy-thriller, Murder in Play, by Simon Brett - company supporter, and creator of the R4 Charles Paris series, starring Bill Nighy. Directed by Owen Calvert Lyons, from London’s cutting-edge Ovalhouse Theatre. Tickets are selling fast, so early booking is advised!
Aldeburgh Summer Theatre breaks new ground this year with Open Stages showcasing the best in new writing, including Camden Festival hit Pigeons, with Marlene Sideaway (Maureen from BAFTA-nominated BBC Sitcom “Mum”) nationally acclaimed Romany Theatre’s Bus Stop, and Kenneth Branagh Award-winning writer Jackie Carreira’s Invisible Irene, audience-choice hit of the 2019 INK Festival tour and London transfer.
We also feature Sunday evenings of Wine Verse and Song, the first with our patron and original Summer Theatre Madame Arcati, Jill Freud, adding to the magic, the second with the uplifting and inspiring Rogue Shanty Buoys and guests. From August 6th to 9th there is Siren Festival, a unique programme of amazing immersive performances and experiential events from (organically!) home-grown environmentalists Incredible Oceans and local community volunteers.
All centred at The Aldeburgh Jubilee Hall, fast becoming the premier Arts and Entertainment hub on the East Anglian seaboard; Now that Summer Theatre is in residence, our audiences also benefit from our covered external courtyard for pre-show and interval relaxation and refreshment.
S.A.T.’s new Producers, Richard Blaine and Marianne Fellowes, came from different sides of the footlights to put together the amazing team for Aldeburgh Summer Theatre 2019, but share the same philosophy: providing the very best in arts and entertainment, in a warm and welcoming venue. We all look forward to seeing you and adding to the delight of summer on our Sunrise Coast.
